What Is Solar Energy

Solar energy is one of the most well known and widely used alternative energy sources. In fact, it’s the fastest growing renewable electricity source in the world, though it only accounts for one percent of the energy used in the United States. Still, solar power is considered one of the most accessible renewable energy sources.

How does it Work ?

Solar energy collects energy from the sun and converts it to electricity. Solar power, is harnessed through panels made up of photovoltaic cells that are placed in areas that get direct sunlight. They may be seen on top of individual roofs or in large fields of panels to harness mass amounts of energy. The photovoltaic cells in the solar panels collect sunlight and turn it into direct current electricity. The direct current electricity then goes through the inverter, which converts the direct current electricity into alternative current (AC) electricity. Alternative current electricity is what powers most homes and buildings. The AC travels from the inverter to the electrical panel or breaker box, which then powers your lights and appliances.

What are the benefits ?

Solar energy has many benefits. It’s a renewable energy source, so you can reduce your carbon footprint and know that you’re helping reduce pollution. It’s also a good way to save money. While solar technology may be a large investment upfront, it will lower your electric bill. Many electric companies let solar users earn credits for unused solar energy to offset consumption costs. Also, studies show that homes with solar panels sell 20% faster and for 17% more money.
